This happened to my pcs. They hypnotic patterned a group of guards. The guards being led by a trained wizard sgt proceeded to chain wake each other up in one turn. Its still good to deny actions.

I ran a campaign a while back, and the most beloved NPC from the party was a shopkeeper I whipped up on the fly. He was a general store manager, a Lizardfolk named Ben who ran the store Ben and Buckets. The players loved him.

I started DMing back in the 80s and my NPCs have always been just notes on scraps of paper... right up until the party takes an interest in one. That's when I start to flesh them out and make them more than just "shopkeeper #5" and they become a person, and I will occasionally make them a character sheet, but usually not. I try my best to keep them simple so I can use them quickly.

as reddit would say "ETAH" - everyone's the asshole here DM was garbo for such a hideous concept, and for allowing the other PCs to do whatever they want OP was trash for joining a game HE KNEW HE WOULDNT LIKE, and then trying to force-change it Alchemist was a douche for acting like he did - maybe only the Druid is innocent in all this....

That is because each level is a grind. Take those 26 rooms and consolidate down to 4 main encounters per level and that 3 year module becomes 6 months.

Honestly, if a player makes a "Lone Wolf"character that refuses to work with the team and is only interested in doing his own thing, I'm not running a separate side game just for their special little OC. I'm talking to them about what their genuine expectations are, informing them of the intent of the game I'm running, and giving them one more chance to either join the game in progress, or go somewhere else and write their OC's story. Even Wolverine, for all his "Lone Wolf who plays by his own rules" attitude, works with the X-Men as part of a team because that's how it works.

People of the comment section, I request judgement. I've not properly played him yet, but I've got a Great Old One Warlock/Necromancy Wizard whose story is that his mom runs a doomsday cult, but he left because he got a girlfriend (who was sacrificed) and is now just trying to get as far away as possible, while trying to make up for his time in the cult by being a good guy. Chaotic, but, Good.

I cheat. I fully believe in employing creative retrocausality, and will create the characters after the players start to explore them... This isn't how I create every NPC, mind you, and players won't be able to just randomly turn every NPC they care about into a major one. But even major NPC's only get the skeleton of how they're connected to the plot, until the players choose to interact.

The red kobold my players decided to adopt instead of kill was named Bōs. The players call him Blue because that's the only color d4 I had for him. His name is, and shall forever be, Blue. Guess what they named the blue kobold they met later in the campaign I'll give you a hint, by then I had a new set of red dice

I just made opposing rolls of a d6. If the creature won he deals damage to the player, if the player wins the creature dies. It simulates how some creatures may be more or less wounded on the battlefield, and the quick pace as well.

Yeah. a big book is bad. You need several modules of smaller level ranges that all fit the story. Part #1 Levels 1-3, #2 levels 3-5, #3 levels 5-7, etc. All separate modules sold separately but all part of the same story ark. Each module would only have level appropriate stuff in it. No chance of accidenttally finding content way to high of a level. You know, how modules used to be done in the olden times. I remmber doing the demon book where you are in the underdark. My brother ran the campaign. He ended up putting an unscalale cliff in our way to keep us from wandering into an area that was way too high a level for us.

The best bit of advice you can give any DM is dont expect your players to care about your Lore, your NPCs or your World. Make your game about your players and they will always be engaged and care about coming back time and time again to your table.

I had a character who was an orphan who got recruited by a wandering young lady to be an escort bodyguard. I put the lady as someone with 'status' since I wasn't thinking about specifics too much. Anyway, the two became friends until she left him in his sleep, and now my character is on an adventure trying to make himself known, so he can find a way back to her and resolve his 'uselessness'. As such, my character is friendly, but a bit too clingy and overcompensating. Pretty basic background, I could say. My DM secretly incorporated the backstory in our first major plot point... It turns out the young lady was actually a princess rebelling from being engaged to a malicious foreign prince, and she returned to the palace because she didn't want anybody else to be hurt by the prince's dastardly schemes. I made my backstory simple and open, not thinking much of it, not knowing it was going to be utilized in the plot that way. As they say, a backstory with no specifics is a backstory that can become anything. "I just want to pay the bills, man" is peak since you can improvise characteristics at opportune moments and stick with what you established, along with what the DM cooked.
